Leafy Seadragon

The Leafy Seadragon (Phycodurus eques) lives only in the sea waters of the southern Australia and can reach a maximum length of 35 cm.
The Seadragon's body lacks scales but has a plated bony armour. That is not his biggest protection against attacks. His real weapons are his leaf-like appendages. He uses them as camouflage, he mimics seaweed and can curl up like a bal. The Leafy Seadragon also can use long, sharp spines on his body to prevent an attack.
Grown up Leafy Seadragons have a green to yellow-brown coloured skin with thin, dark-edged bands and all the adults faces have different facial markings.
While the female Seadragon lays the eggs (up to 120), the male Seadragon carries the eggs after the female has fertilized and attached the eggs under the male's tail. The Leafy Seadragon eats plankton and larval fish.
