Chapter 1 The midnight awakening
Giovanna woke with a start to the sound of someone knocking on the cabin door. She couldn't understand why her parents, John and Loren-Anne, didn't get the door. Then Giovanna remembered her parents went on a long day's ride, yesterday afternoon, to ask help from King Zulu, because many robbers had been terrorizing the village. Giovanna got out from her tangle of dirty bed sheets and walked towards the door. She stopped right before the door. There, hanging on the wall, was a mirror. The mirror her mother had given her for her birthday, yesterday morning. She looked at her self, and was taken aback, she had an elegant face, medium sized lips and a small nose, she was now 13, and many men from the village often asked for her hand in marriage, but she turned them all down. What had intrigued everyone, even her parents, were her eyes. They were like a trapped rainbow, with colors of all shades. The color that stood out the most was silver.
The beating on the door was louder by the time Giovanna reached it. She opened the door to find a young man, her age, with a sword (Giovanna suspected that he was a Knight of Zulu), standing there, with a grim look on his face.
He said, "Is this the residence of Giovanna, the swords lady and archer?"
She answered, "Yes, what do you want? It must be pretty important to come riding out here in the middle of the night." He stood there looking awkward in the full moon's light.
He began, " Your parents, John and Loren-Anne, well, were ambushed near a village I had been to settle a quarrel between two butchers who wanted the big Nixie, one of the archers had shot. Well, on my way there I saw three things lying on the road. One was your father's body; the other two things were this silver sapphire necklace and this note. " He held up the note and the necklace.
"Come inside."She stopped and turned to look at him, " Wait, what's your name?"
The knight's name was Xavier. He told Giovanna about how he never found her mother's body.
"She must have been taken by the Griffin Riders."
He said " Well then we have to find my mother!" Giovanna yelled at his face.
He yelled back at her, "You don't understand, you cannot just storm into an evil griffin's lair, they could tear you apart!"
"I don't care, I've got my own horse and I'll go there myself!" she stormed out of her cabin, grabbing her bag, her clothes, her swords, and her bow and arrows as she went, she climbed on to her horse then galloped off into the night. Cursing the arrogant girl, Xavier got on his horse and galloped after her.
