Echoes of wings
Part 1
Life was becoming hard. I was one of the few female dragons left in our clan. Because of the plague that came on the winds thick and pungent ten years ago, killing many young old and middle aged. The pressure to find a mate was becoming too much for me. Choose him he is silver a stunning color said one, and another said choose him he is green just like you. And others say things like he is intelligent and he is charming. Most of the time it’s the males mothers saying this about their children trying to give them a chance in life on the last stretch of there own. I lay in my cave on top of the jewels most of which were given to me as courtship gifts. My mind was racing. I didn’t want to leave the cave and be bombarded with anymore suggestions of who to be bound to. Someone was disturbing my train of thought with ungodly racket out side. I got up and walked out ready to yell at the inconsiderate being that was disturbing me. It was total chaos. The animals, all of them, the unicorns, squirrel rabbits, deer, and wolves. Snakes, lizards, were running out of the forest into our dragon land and over the Mountains into the barren wasteland.
"What’s going on?" I shouted to a passing trio of unicorns.
"There are dragons with humans pushing us out of the forest" said a female as she anxiously watched the other two get ahead of her.
"What do you mean?" I asked. Humans were extinct as far as we knew.
"The dragons listen to the humans that’s all I can tell you" she started walking backwards "I have to go my baby and mate need me with them" She ran before I could get in another word.
I started going against the flow of the animals out of the forest I wanted to see these humans.
"Isis" yelled one of the male dragons that were after me. I think he is the one who is intelligent.
I stopped and turned to face him "What?" I snapped.
"What are you doing?" he asked as he approached me through the rushing crowd.
"I am going to go see why all the animals are rushing into the waste land they know that the can’t survive there for long." I said, "Besides a unicorn told me humans were there."
"No way they don’t exist it’s a fairy tale and more importantly we have to keep you out of danger your one of our three remaining females in child baring years and well before at least thirteen more years." He said
I hate being told that I HAD to have children some day. They were a lot of work and take years to hatch and even longer to raise. I didn’t love anyone here and I felt no attraction to any particular male here either. I ran into the forest headfirst. When I came out on the other side there were dragons but they weren’t like my clan they were different. My kind we were able to fly and we had two wings that looked like a bat but only much larger and we had ears that were like and elves. Our males had spines going down their back from the tip of their nose where a slightly larger horn was. These dragons had four wings that were like a dragonfly’s and they didn’t have as apparent ears or the spins going down their backs they did have horns but it was only on coming out of their fore head like a unicorns and it was smaller then a unicorns. On the strangers backs were the humans and they were all stunned to see me. More members of my clan burst out of the forest. They had followed me to make sure that I wouldn’t get myself killed.
"Humans" said one of my clan members "Do you think they are intelligent?"
"Who owns you?" asked a human he was the only one with feathers on his helmet.
"Mother earth" said on of my clan members "and this happens to by our home that you are currently destroying."
"Excuse me" said the human "Your home is in the pasture with the other live stock"
"WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!" Yelled one of my clan.
I gently covered his mouth with my tail before he could say anything. "We are not animals that can be told what to do. Especially not in our home land." I was being sincere. The human just looked at me and pressed his legs into the dragons’ sides. The dragon let out a roar.
"Something is wrong," said the dragon next to me as he looked up into the sky.
I tilted my head back. The sky was filling up with the strange dragons that I had seen for the first time today and all of them looked like zombies listening to their master.

Part 2
I didn’t know how to fight. I was female; I had been expected to have children not engage in combat. I ran back through the forest as quickly as I could. I was scared the only place I knew to go was my cave. It was my sanctuary and I couldn’t let the dragonfly race take it or my gold and jewels I had to bury it. Working feverishly I buried it in the floor of my cave. All the while I could hear them getting closer. I knew they would find me. My cave was not well hidden there was no reason for it to be, until now. I wish it was more hidden. But at least my treasure was safe, now all there was to do was wait for them to leave or find me. I could hear them they were not quiet they were yelling and shouting. My clan was fleeing I could tell that much from their communication. One of the dragonfly dragon’s came into my cave he was green and he looked at me. I roared at it and spread my wings to make me look bigger and stronger then I really was. The dragon left I assumed it was going to leave me alone. I was wrong. Humans came in at least a dozen of them. All of them had chains made of a very strong metal that I had never encountered before. I talked, I roared, I struggled and fought with all my might. It was a failure. Two of the dragonfly dragons were each pulling a chain that was wrapped around either one of my legs. I was awake but weak. They dragged me to where the dragonfly dragons stayed. It was out in a field. They dropped the chains. My one side hurt painfully all the dragging had hurt me.
"Behave wild one," said one of the dragons "The humans will not hesitate to kill you" Judging by the voice he was male. He was a darker green then myself. His eyes were a beautiful blue.
"Why haven’t they?" I asked.
"Well hatchling, you’re a hostage here and every time those dragons decide to attack we threaten to kill you," he said.
Another dragons dropped a deer in front of me.
"Eat," said the green male.
I tried to get up to eat but I just wasn’t strong enough. I lay there not; moving again I just closed my eyes.
"You aren’t any good to us if you’re dead" he ripped off a chunk of meat from the animal and started to chew.
"What is the point of this?" I asked looking at him.
"Open your mouth," he said with his mouth full.
I did as he said. He spit the food that he had chewed into my mouth. It was something mothers did for hatchlings. It was humiliating being fed this way but I could see no alternative and I was starving.
"Thank you," I said knowing that he could have been cruel and let me starve to death.
"You are way too kind. He said, "I am your kidnapper. If I hadn’t gone into that cave I would’ve never found you."
"Maybe that’s not such a bad thing," I said trying to keep a positive attitude at least now I wouldn’t have to worry about finding a mate.
"I have to finish feeding you" he said, " I have other things to do today"
He continued feeding me as if I had just hatched. When he finished he left. I assumed he had some kind of authority he talked like he had convinced the humans to let him keep me alive. I was alone in the middle of a field. I wouldn’t move and I was a sight for all the locals. The little ones all wanted to see how close they could get to me but their mothers prevented them from ever getting close enough to speak to me. A few of the older males would come over in pairs and they would talk about how weak I looked and that I must have been only expected to have offspring and not fight for land. The ground was uncomfortable I missed my gold and jewels. As it got dark the suspense of being in a new place wore off and I eventually fell asleep.

Part 3
The time stretched out for a day then a week and weeks turned into months soon I had been a "prisoner" for years. Although I wouldn’t leave even if I was told I could. I had fallen in love! The dark green dragon with the most enchanting blue eyes was my mat. He was named Raphiel. He was the most intelligent and passionate dragon I had ever encountered. I knew he was the one for me. On the day that he asked me if I wanted to do anything with my life because my clan was obviously not coming back. I answered "Yes, be your mate" He agreed.
We have two beautiful children. They are sixteen years old. My boy is named Rafe and he is already training to be a warrior. My little princess was named Samara and she still has no idea what she wants to do she changes her mind all the time. I lay in the grass basking in the warm light of the sun.
"Mom!" shouted Samara as she flopped on top of me. "Dad says he will take us to the pond if it’s okay with you so can we go to the pond?"
"Yeah mom," asked Rafe as he tried not to do the same as Samara. His warrior tanning said he shouldn’t be so childish. I hated that he was missing out on a childhood.
"How long will you be gone?" I asked.
"Only for the afternoon," Raphiel said "Don’t worry it wont be that big of a deal I can handle them"
"It’s not them I am worried about" I said as I got up knocking Samara off of me. "It’s you! All you ever do is work for the humans and then you come home and play with the kids and get maybe a half-hour of sleep. You need your rest more often."
I am a mighty dragon,’ he said trying to impress the kids "Sleep is a trivial thing that is only needed for those who are growing"
"Raph!" I said, "I am being serious."
"Okay, Okay" He said "Tomorrow I’ll stay home all day and sleep"
"You hear that kids?" I said, "If you go today tomorrow you can’t wake your father."
"Yes mom" said Rafe.
"Okay, okay, can we go now?" Samara asked.
"I love you," I said.
"I lover you too mom," said Samara as she jumped on me.
"I love you mom," said Rafe with a smile on his face. Even if he hated saying it that didn’t make it untrue.
"I love you Isis enjoy your afternoon we’ll be back before dusk’ he said. "If you fall asleep like you normally do I’ll be waiting up for you." He smiled and winked at me, It had been a long time since we had even talked.
"Now you can go," I said as I settled down in the grass. "And be careful I don’t want anyone getting lost!" I shouted after them as they walked away.
I woke up. I had fallen asleep at noon to wake up at dusk. I lifted my head something was wrong. I looked over my shoulder at the cave no one was home. My clan was back and attacking and my babies were in the forest in the middle of the fighting. I took flight and went to the spring where Raphiel, Rafe, and Samara were. I couldn’t see anything except fighting dragons. I frantically looked around. I had began to panic. WHERE WERE MY BABIES?
"Isis," said a voice that I recognized, from a long time ago it was the intelligent silver dragon.
I looked at him "Where are my babies? I have to find my babies!" I was ready to cry.
He just looked over his shoulder. I followed his gaze. He was looking a Raphiel who was just lying there. In an instant I was at his side. Lying next to him were the lifeless bodies of my Samara and my Rafe. They were taken from me. My beloved babies were gone I had been too slow. They were only babies. I was over come with emotions, rage, grief, anger, and sorrow. I wanted my revenge on the ones who had taken my babies from me. Before I knew what I was doing I had the taste of blood in my mouth and was right in the middle of the fighting and killing. My first kill had been a tan dragon male from the clan I was born in. After that it all became a blur of red and screams.

Part 4
At he end of the battle many of my blood kin were dead, dying or fleeing with a serious injury. Some how my revenge had not made me feel any better all it did was make me feel worse for causing more pain and suffering in the world.
Raphiel and I laid down next to the lifeless bodies of our children and began a vigil for them. I cried most of the night, it had been so long since I felt depressed enough to cry that I had forgotten how much energy it seemed to suck out of you for such a passive activity.
When the humans started becoming suspicious of Raphiels absence they came to see what was wrong. Soon after every human in town had discovered the great loss we had suffered. They brought all kinds of gifts ranging from jewels and gold to sonnets and ballads. All of their gifts were appreciated in one way or another.
By sun down the humans had made a life size statue of Rafe and another of Samara they would be used to mark my babies graves. The humans had also prepared coffins for each of my babies and were ready to bury them. It was a strange thing to do I thought at first but then figured that they would be protected from scavengers.
I watched them put Samara into a wooden box and then thy placed Rafe in his identical wooden box. It all seemed like a dream. They put them into the cold, hard, un-loving ground. I did not cry. I had no more tears left to cry no more energy left to do anything but watch. A few of the younger humans put flowers into the graves with my babies before the men had began throwing dirt onto them.
Samara she was my energy, anytime you were around her the energy flew off of her and landed in you making you want to dance and play with her.
Rafe was my happiness, he was so serious it made you laugh to think that he was only sixteen. You always wanted to do anything to get him to laugh when you were around him.
They were both gone now and I would just have to be okay with that and there was noting I could do about it.
I returned to my cave. I had been stunned, every thing seemed unreal and far away. I let myself sleep. A part of me hoped I would wake-up from this nightmare and another part of me knew it was real and had accepted that.
My sleep was plagued by nightmares of my children being killed it would happen over and over again each time I was too late to save them by less then a minuet. Then to add a twist I would find Raphiel dead next to them as well.

Part 5
Raphiel came home early the next morning. It was still dark out.
"Are you all right?" he asked.
"No" I sighed laying down. "It seems like a dream like it’s all pretend." I said gently.
"It isn’t a dream" said Raphiel. "One of those dragons sent a unicorn to tell us they want to have a small peace talk with us."
"Send the whole army to kill them" I sighted while trying to look asleep.
"We can’t do that, you A.K.A. my right hand dragon, and my left hand dragon shell go," he said as he laid down next to me you don’t have a choice Isis, I’ve already agreed."
"When do we go?" I asked a little upset that he had said I would go without asking me first but I understand that he said we would go because it is an unwritten law of warfare that we go to peace talks.
"Tomorrow morning," he said.
"I am going to go get something to eat," I said as I got up "Sleep well."
"Isis, I don’t know what I’d do with out you" he said "I lover you"
"Raph you’re the one who rescued me" I said "I love you.’
Once out of the cave I went down to the spring where my babies had been slaughtered. The signs of a recent battle were still there. I got a drink of cool water form the spring. A young human female approached me.
She had the most beautiful long straight black hair. Her stunning aquamarine eyes grabbed you and held you. Her clothes told me she was noting more then a servant.
"I have noting to give you for your loss" said the human girl. "But if you ever need a favor just ask me and I’ll try to help."
"Tell me girl, how old are you?" I asked her gently.
"Twenty-two years," she said. "And I realize that to a dragon that is not long."
"Yes, I do need a favor," I said, "I do not have a rider yet. Most all dragons get one at a certain age."
"Actually they are not all riders they prefer to be called guardians." She said ‘Their job is to make sure that if the dragon they are watching over is killed they get respected properly."
"I’ll forgive you for interrupting me, as I was saying, So will you be my guardian?" She nodded "Yes!" Her eyes were full of happiness and joy.
"Do we have to go and report this to anyone in your community?" I asked. I had never really been interested in having a guardian before.
"Yes," she said ‘We have to go tell the lord of the order of the guardians."
"Get on and we shell go find this lord of the order," I laid down.
She got on and said, "I’ve never done this before."
"Me nether." I stood up slowly.
We went to the village and found the lord of the order of the guardians with no problem. But we did run into another problem.
"She’s a women!" shouted the lord "She can’t have such an important role."
"She can have an important job and will, or us dragons will refuse to protect you from the enemy." I threatened.
"Very well then" said the lord.
The girl began to whisper things in my ear for me to say to the lord.
"What about the issued armor?" I asked after she whispered it to me.
"Fine," he said.
"What about the special housing?" I asked when the girl told me to.
"Granted" he replied.
"And the money?" I questioned just as the girl requested me to.
"Paid in full on time each week." He answered. And so it was done I had a guardian.
"By the way,’ said the girl as I set her down ‘My name is Nimadin."
"Nimadin, tomorrow morning we are going to peace talks." I said.
"I’ll be ready," she replied. She looked happier then I ever believed a human could look.
"Good" I said back to her with a smile on my face. I got something to eat then went back to my cave after laying down next to Raphiel I went to sleep and had no dreams or nightmares.

Part 6
The next morning Raphiel and I were awakened by Nimadin, she had walked right into the cave and she gently spoke to us. "Wake up."
"What?" Raphiel said groggily then realized that he didn’t know Nimadin "Who are you?" he was up.
"She is my guardian," I said as I sat up.
"Thank you so much for letting me be your guardian,’ said Nimadin as she bowed.
"How could you let a women?" shouted Raphiel.
"What is wrong with a female?" I asked now wide-awake.
"The humans don’t like to put women in power," he said.
"And my clan thought females were only good for children" I said "It isn’t fair and you guys treat me fairly even if my people don’t. So why can’t we treat human females nicely even if their own kind don’t?"
"POINT MADE!" he roared happily "Lets go."
I let Nimadin get on my back and we went to the peace talks. They were held out in the middle of the barren wasteland. The silver dragon from my clan was there and so were my parents.
"My little girl!" shouted my mother with tears in her eyes she was yellow colored. She ran up to me and nuzzled me.
‘I missed you mom,’ I said and it was true my mom had once been my best friend.
My dad just stood next to the silver dragon he was just happy that I wasn’t dead but for the life of him wouldn’t say a word. I could see the smile in his eyes. We walked over to the others. We were now with in talking distance or as Raphiel and any other warrior would say attacking distance.
"So lets get this talk under way," said my dad still refusing to smile.
"I agree so what are the terms for peace for you?" Raphiel asked.
"We would like to show you our apologies by sacrificing two of or young dragons to you," said the silver dragon.
"NO!" I snapped "They don’t deserve to pay for your mistake. You need to find another way so that only you suffer."
‘Wait a minuet," said my father. ‘Isn’t that a little cruel?" He was the most pure blue dragon in the whole world. (Compared to all the dragons I’ve seen so far.)
"Yes it is, but isn’t slaughtering my children cruel as well?" I asked. No one said anything "Point made," I said barley above a whisper.
"What if we exiled him?" asked my father.
"We can’t,’ said my mother.
"Here is what I’ll do to make it up to you, I’ll do anything you want me to do for you" said the silver dragon.
"I want you to find your clan another valley," I said right away.
"You know that is impossible," said my mother.
"No, it’s not. Anything is possible as long as you believe it is," I said.
"Come on it would take years and our clan is starting to fight with our neighboring clan who has so graciously taken us in," My father said.
"I know that but he can do it," I said. "He is the smart one, if his intelligence can get him in then it can get him out.’
"She is right," said the silver dragon "I am really intelligent so I can handle this finding a valley shouldn’t be that hard."
"Then it is said and we can all go now," I said.
"May I go with you and see your world?" asked my mother. I looked at Raphiel and pleaded to him with my eyes to say yes.
"She may come," said Raphiel.
"Your mom is pretty," said Nimadin "You r dad is handsome"
"Yes born and bread to be perfect" I said
We headed in separate directions. Me my mother, Raphiel and his left hand dragon. Along with Nimadin all went in one direction.
"War is folly," said Nimadin "As once a scholar told me."
"And he was right" I said.

Part 7
When I came back to the valley with my mother alot of the dragonfly dragons didn't like this idea the enemy shouldn't be showen the lay out of the camp. I started to have second thoughts about bringing her here.
"So you still live in your old cave?" my mother asked.
"Yes" I said as we went over to my bace.
"Can I go home now?" asked Nimadin who was on my back.
"Yes," I said as I laid down to let her get off. Nimadin climbed off and went home.
"So your friends with the humans?" my mother asked.
"Yes," I said "They like us and would do anything to please us."
"What can such a small creature do?" she asked not believing a human could ever pleases a dragon.
"Well, when our kin diethey comfort us and bring gifts," I said. "They also give them a proper burial with a becautiful head stone."
"Why would that matter?" asked my mother.
"It makes you fell better to know that your kin are in the ground not being eaten by a wolf or some other animal."
"I never thought of that," said mother. I showed her where my babies were buried.
"I am sorry," she said "We weren't suppose to kill the young ones we were only suppose to kill those who attacked us first."
"It was the 'intelligent' silver dragon," I said "I had given up hope of you ever coming back."
"So where do the huamns stay?" she asked.
I took her to the village. "This is where the humans stay," I said "They really are nice creatures to be around."
"Yes, I would think so with the way you talk you're their gods," said my mother.
"No they don't think of us as gods they think of us a rulers like a king," I said.
"I understand but why would they pick a king of a different race?" she asked.
"Becasue we are more powerful then theri race nad therefore if any one of our race or theirs try to attack we can fight them off," I said "It's a partnership."
"Amazing," said my mother.
"Isis!" shouted Raphiel. "Come here!"
"Stay here mom," I said as I went over to Raphiel.
"This is a test to see if your mother can be trusted but we can't tell her. We are going to thell her that if anyone came from the human side of our establishment we would be crushed and if they attack your clan cannot be trusted but if they pass perhaps we can let them live here in peace with us." said Raphiel.
"I don't want to give my mother a test," I said "She is my mother."
"Well, I didn't come up with this one on my own me and a few of the other warriors think that it would be best," he said. "Along with a few of the humans but they just agree with what us dragons say."
"Okay," I said. I turned and went back to my mother and told her that the best way to get rid of us would be to attack form the opposit side of their last ambush.
"I don't need to know that I would never attack you I am getting along fine with the other dragons." said mother. That made me feel a little better. Maybe she wouldn't say anything to the others and they would pass the test without ever knowing that is was a test.
"I love you mom," I said
"I love you too honey," said my mother.
"You should most likely go home now." I said "I don't have anywhere for you to sleep."
"Yes, I guess I sould go now your father is going to be worried about me," she said "You kow considering that I just walked into enemy territory."
"I know mom I love you and hope I'll see ou again," I said "And please don't refer to me as an enemy."
"Bye sweet heart," she flew into the sky.
I watched as she disappeared into the horizon.

Part 8
"Raphiel," I said, "It has been weeks since the other dragons started communicating with us, I don’t think they are going to attack us."
"Yeah so?" asked Raphiel he had had a bad day and wasn’t in a good mood.
"So I was wondering if maybe we could have them come over to like actually talk to us and the other dragons because how can they decide if we let them live with us if they don’t know who they are?" I asked.
"All right but if anything goes wrong don’t think my kind would hesitate to commit genocide to yours," said Raphiel.
"Okay," I said happily ‘ I am going to go get Nimadin and go see them right now."
I got Nimadin and we made plans for them to come over to the valley for awhile to meet the other dragons.
The rest of the time before they would come and visit was spent preparing for the day. Some dragons worried about what they would say others worried about what they would do and a few made plans to teach them games that even I hadn’t known when I arrived here.
When the get together came around it turned into more of a party. Everyone was having a good time and getting along. They enjoyed sharing the differences in each other’s life styles.
Because of the success of the party, the clans decided to have another one again sometime soon. Before we knew it we were having dragons form the other clan coming over every once in a while to hang out with a new friend they had made belonging to our clan.
Soon some of our clan thought it would be better for them to just stay with us because to the problems my blood clan was having with the clan they were staying with.
The entire clan agreed to let my blood kin come and stay with us and so it was declared we would all merge together and become one giant clan living in the beautiful valley.
When we did merged it was called the war is folly act. The new policy when trying to get a new home where other dragons were at was to talk to them and ask permission. It gets foggy around the part when the dragons refuse to let us move in, war is then an option.
The intelligent silver dragon never came back it was assumed that he had died somewhere along the way either of starvation or exhaustion.
I love that we had come together as one clan and all because of me. I never thought I would do anything great in my life.
To add to the good news I have three more eggs that will soon hatch!
