Dragons in games

 Dragons in games

Dragons play major roles in some of the fantasy-computer games. Most of the time they are presented as creatures the player has to fight against but sometimes the player can play as if he was a dragon and the dragon is actually a friend in the adventure.
In 3DO's Might and Magic VIII (Day of the Destroyer), an action role playing game, for instance, it is possible to have dragon in your party.
Other games like 3DO's Heroes of Might and Magic III and Heroes of Might and Magic IV, show fantastic and powerful dragons that must be beaten.
This section is dedicated to dragons in computer role-playing games. You'll find brief story lines, pictures, personal opinions and portals to gaming-sites.

I made one map in English, called "The Wispering Fountain". It is a large and difficult map for two players. The goal is to rescue lost Troglodyte children, the only way to receive gratitude and fame. You can download the map as a Zip-file. You'll need your own copy of Heroes III AB to open and to play the map. You can download more maps at:

Heroes of Might and Magic III/IV
3DO's Heroes of Might and Magic III (The restoration of Erathia) is a role playing game that you can play alone or with others (with or without the Internet). The goal of the game is to win a map scenario, for instance build a special kind of town of defeat a specific hero or monster (yes, that monster could be a dragon too). Heroes of Might and Magic III is a very addictive game, because a player can play different scenario's (maps) over and over again. A player can even create new scenario (make a map) or play a scenario some body else made. You can change the play level form a range within easy to impossible so you can get better and better while playing the scenario's.
In this game, while trying to acchieve the goal, given at the start of the game, you are constantly building and capturing towns, defeating other heroes with armor and/or with magic and you have to gather resources and armies.
That is were the dragons come in again. Several towns give the hero the opportunity to gather dragons that will fight for him or her. Some of those dragons will be shown here.
Heroes of Might and Magic III can be played with two expansion packs, Armageddon's Blade and Shadows of Death.
In Armageddon's Blade some fine new dragons like the Azure dragon, were created, dragons that the hero has to fight against but that are also willing to join the dragon if he is strong enough. I'll show you some of those dragons too.
Heroes of Might and Magic IV, is, in my opinion, even better: the playground is much more realistic and the heroes you choose, can be teached a variaty of skills and spells. On the other hand, I would have liked to see more dragons in the game. Now there is the mighty black dragon, the strong bone dragon and the not so strong fairy dragon. The expansion pack "The Gathering Storm" makes the game even more fun to play.

Mighty Dragons
AB Azure Dragon Azure Dragon

The first dragon I want to present to you is the Azure Dragon (Heroes III). It is a very rare, azure colored and powerful dragon and it is a great flyer too. Defeating him is very difficult.
Rumors are heard that the Azure Dragon can freeze you because you are in great fear, just because you saw that dragon
The Azure Dragon is some times willing to join you in your quest if you are strong enough and if you have a lot of gold, you can buy one to fight for you. Imagine what a powerful hero you are if several or lots of Azure Dragons are fighting in your army. I think no one wants to meet you any more in combat.

AB Crystal Dragon Crystal Dragon

The next dragon I'm going to present you is the Crystal Dragon (Heroes III). The Crystal Dragon is made with magic out of pure red crystal. If you are near to him you can not only see his glowing eyes but you can also see and hear its glowing heart. It is bit strange to see the strong Crystal Dragon fight for he does not fly, he just walks very fast towards his enemy after which escaping him is a hard project for he can smash you in moment.
The Crystal Dragon is also some times willing to join and if you have a lot of gold, you can also buy one or several Crystal Dragons to join you in your quest.

AB Rust Dragon Rust Dragon

The dragon to the left is a Rust Dragon (Heroes III).
The Rust Dragon, who is not the prettiest dragon to look at, loves to eat sulfur and that makes him spit rust. If the rust hits your armor, it will melt in a minute so you will be very easy to kill for you are getting more and more weak because of his attacks.
The rust dragon is a good flyer, just as the Azure dragon.
And just like the Azure Dragon and the Crystal Dragon he will join your army if he likes you enough and also can he be bought.

Might and Magic: Introduction
3DO's Might and Magic VI to IX are role playing games with real story lines that ask a lot from your strategic skills. Do you see the heroes on the first picture on this page? They do not feel very good, yes, you did notice that correct! Those dragons are strong, very strong.
You don't like my introduction to the Might and magic series? Well, the dragons are almost impossible to beat so, as a dragon, I think this is a great introduction!!!
While playing the game, I have never been able to beet one of those dragons in the early start of the game, I had to trick them out, which is possible (well, you dragons out there, do not feel bad or minor, we can be "out tricked" too).

Dragons in M&M VI
Might and magic VI
As a player in Might and Magic VI you have to finish one final quest and several other quests that can make your life as a playing hero a lot better.
You play as a party of four characters (see the bottom of the picture). You can point out the characters before you start playing and while playing, you train them in different skills.
You have to fight a lot of monsters, including dragons just like the ones you see on the picture. The creatures (or monsters) you have to fight against are not so strong in the beginning of the game (rats, spiders and goblins for instance) but the further you get, the stronger they are. It is possible to meet dragons in the beginning of the game: there is a way to earn easy cash by a secret entrance on the roofs of one of the homes in the starting towns but......if you close your eyes for just one second, your party will be killed, I told you that you would meet dragons if you choose that path, so be very fast and awake if you decide to enter that secret path.

Dragons in M&M VII
Might and magic VII
The seventh game is my favorite of the Might and Magic games.
It has lots of monsters to fight but they are not as tough as in Might and Magic VI and you are given the opportunity of choosing a light or a dark path. While playing the light path, you have to forfeit good task, walking the dark path makes you do evil things. The quests you have to forfeit before being able to complete the final quest are different in both paths. The promotion quests vary too.
You also have to be very careful in choosing the party members at the beginning. A Cleric for instance can learn all the Light and Dark spells at Grand master level but he cannot learn Water spells at that level so he can not place Beacons of cast Town Portal while being in danger. A Sorcerer in the other hand can do all those things but can not cast Healing spells at Grand master level. This is big difference compared to Might and Magic VI in which game both races can learn all the spells I just mentioned at the highest level. It depends on what you want to achieve and how easy or difficult you want to make it for yourself.
I did play the game once too with two Druids and two Monks, neither of those races can cast the spells mentioned before but they can do other things, like casting spells at Master Lever (Druids) and the Monks can become fine and strong fighters without being armed. This was a difficult party to play with, but it all turned out well at the end and I did play it again to get a better score.

The Dragon Ithilgore in M&M VIII
Might and magic VIII
While Might and Magic VI was very hard to play and Might and Magic VII was not that hard, Might and Magic VIII was too easy for me. At first I thought it was because of the experience so I played Might and Magic VII again. Well, that game is much more difficult so I think Might and Magic is indeed easier then the other games.
You start with just one hero and you cannot dismiss that hero so choose carefully. While you are on the road trying to forfeit your quests, you can ask other beings to join you. At a certain point you can even ask a dragon to join your dragon to join your party and that is nice feature in this game. The dragon can cast the fly spell for your party all the time and that ability allows you to move on fast.
In this game you also have to be careful in picking up new party members because not every class can learn all the spells of combat tactics. Sometimes you have to add a specific character to your party to forfeit a quest which can be irritating if you have to switch that character with an already well build up one of your own (you have to dismiss that character). Well, at least you can go back to any Adventurers Inn later to dismiss the character you really did not want to have and hire the earlier well build character again, but it is in a way annoying to me.
Variation in the game is giving by the opportunity of forming different alliances. It causes different quests. Though, after playing Might and Magic VII, it seems a bit funny to me, that you can very well play with both character of the Light and the Dark path in one party. The advantage of this is being able to cast spells of both sides.

ScreenshotM&M IX
Might and magic IX
The latest game in the Might and Magic series is Might and Magic IX. I just finished it and have to tell you that I am very disappointed about our dragon role in it. There is only one dragon in the whole game, the Dragon King, and that dragon's only role is to be killed or to be left alone. To kill the Dragon King is not very easy, I think he is the most strongest being in the whole game, but still, is that all there is? And is there a big prize for you after you killed that King? No, just a Super Guber award and some fine artifacts in treasure chests. So why bother to disturb him.
Well, so far for the disappointment, of course there are good things in the game too. Just as in Might and Magic VI and VII you start with a party of four, aligned to the Might side or the Magic side. While adventuring, your party meets non role-playing characters that can actually join your party as active members.
Although your party cannot fly in this game (I liked that a lot in the other games), it can run fast and even faster by casting the Fleet Foot Spell. The story line is quit nice, since your real main quest eventually seems to be quit a different quest then the one you started with. The monsters are not too strong and there are not as many monsters as in the previous games.
The magic part of the game is good, since spells now belong to more schools, which gives a spell caster the opportunity to cast a variety of spells if he or she masters the school needed to cast the spell. The might part of the game has some new skills (thrown is a good one for an assassin). The game also contains some not very easy puzzles and traps and has a real 3D-effect which is fun in wandering and looking around but which is not so nice while talking to other characters in the game since they keep on shacking while you talk with them.
